Alfred was born at Teignmouth, Devon, England.

His family immigrated to NZ, arriving at Port Chalmers in Feb 1873 on the 'Charlotte Gladstone'.

Alfred married Annie Russell born at Kaniere on the West Coast in 1868) at Wellington in 1890.

They had 10 children, 5 boys & 5 girls. The last fou were born in Levin.

Two sons served in WW1, Lawrence & Samuel. The latter was killed in France in 1918.

Two son-in-laws, Albert Jordan & David Lamb also served.

Alfred started working life as a storeman in Campbeltown. Around 1896 he was a labourer in Wellington. By 1905 he was in Levin as a contractor & then a wood merchant.

He and Annie are buried in Levin along with one unmarried son & daughter & three married sons with their wives.
