Charles was born at Surrey England.

His parents emigrated to NZ in 1841 along with their first two children.

He married Esther Fruin (also born at Surrey in 1856) at Bulls in 1876.

They had 8 sons 7 6 daughters. One son died as an infant.

One son, Arthur, served in the Boer war. It appeared it may have effeted him mentally as he lived and died at the Porirua mental Hospital.

One son, Octavius & one son-in-law, Francis Williams served in WW1.

Charles settled at Sandon around 1880, moved to Foxton as a gardener around 1890 & the to Queen St Levin as a labourer around 1903.

He and Esther and four of their sons are all buried at Levin.
