Charles Guy POWLES

Charles was born at Wellington.

He married Jessie Richardson (born at Wellington in 1875) at Wellington in 1903.

They had two sons & one daughter.

Charles was a farmer in the Levin/Ohau area before becoming a settler at Te Kiri in Taranaki. He cam back to Otaki around 1903 to be a sawmiller.

He served in the Boer War and at Gallipoli, Sinai & Palestine in WW1. He then joined the NZ Military Forces permanently until 1931 when he became Principal of Flock House at Bulls. During WW2 he became camp commandment at the NZ Army Training camp at Waiouru.

He was awarded the DSO & CMG and was mentioned in dispatches 4 times during WW1.

Both sons served in WW2, Guy in the NZ Artillery & Charles in the NZ medical Corp (he was a doctor).

Guy was knighted for his services as the first NZ Ombudsman.
