He married Sarah Merskell (born at Kensington, London in 1861) at Wellington in 1882.
Sarah and her mother, sister & step father migrated to NZ in 1874, arriving at Wellington. The ship was carrying yellow fever.
Charles started his working life as a fireman then enginedriver for the Wellington Manawatu Railway Co. He then moved to being a publican/hotelkeeper at a range of places, such as Bulls, Paeroa & Whangarei. His final occupation was as a painter in Auckland.
Charles father was killed in an accident at the State Farm in Levin in 1895.
