Charles was born at Wellington.
He married Elizabeth Revell (born at Wanganui in 1864) in 1886.
They had three sons & two daughters.
All three sons, Herbert, Bill, & John, served in WW1. John received the Military Medal (MM).
Elizabeth died in in 1922 so Charles married a widow, Elizabeth Beeston (nee Prince) in 1925. She had one son.
Charles started working life as a carpenter in New Plymouth, then a publican, then a storekeeper at Waitara before becoming a hairdresser in Stratford. By 1919 he was hairdressing at Ohura although Elizabeth was still living at Eltham.
By 1925 he is in Foxton as a painter, By 1935 he is at Queen St in Levin, still as a painter.
