It is not known where Clarence was born, however his parents did live at Greytown.

He married Elizabeth Harvey (born in 1878) in 1910. She was the daughter of Captain Edward Harvey, master of the steamer 'Queen of the South'.

They had three sons, all born in Levin. All three served in WW2. The 2nd son, Osborne (known as Peter) was killed over Belgium in May 1940. He was a Pilot Officer of RAF 107 Squadron flying Bristol Blenheim bombers.

Clarence started out as a chemist's assistant in Wellington, moving to Levin around 1911. He had his own pharmacy in Oxford St, through to at least 1957.

He was a Levin Borough Councillor from 1919 to 1941.
