Daniel HANNAN
Daniel was born in Ballycurrin, County Mayo, Ireland.
He came to NZ with his parents & siblings. His parents are buried at Otokia, Otago.
He married Honoria Fitzgerald (born at Ovens, County Cork, Ireland in 1853) at Hokitika in 1880.
They had three daughters & five sons including twins. Two of the daughters died in their 30's. Four sons, Rickard, James, Thomas & William served in WW1. William received the Military Medal (MM) for valour.
Daniel started out as a policeman ending up at Stafford (on the West Coast) as clerk of the court. He came to Levin as proprietor of the Levin Hotel around 1898 until he died. The family retained the hotel for many years with one son-in-law Leonard Fitzgerald as hotelkeeper in the mid to late 30's.
Daniel was also a Levin Borough Councillor from 1909 - 1913, dying in office.
Four of the sons were involved in farming around the region.
