Edward was born at Normacot, Staffordshire, England.

He married Catherine Wallace [nee Knocks] (born at Otaki in 1855) at Otaki in 1895.

Her first husband was James Wallace who had died in 1894 leaving her with seven daughters & one son all under the age of 20 with the youngest being only 16 days old at his death.

Edward & Catherine had one son.  He, (Edward (Jnr)), served in WW1. Two step son-in laws, Albert Buckton & Frederick Turner also served. Frederick received the Military Cross (MC).

Edward started working life as an engineer at Otaki, moving to Ross as a settler around 1905 before moving back to Otaki around 1911.
