Ernest was born In Axbridge, Soerset, England.
He married Mary Ridler (born at Wellington in 1877) in 1921.
They had one child, a son, who sadly died at birth.
Ernest started out as cook at Upper Hutt. He then went labouring at Longburn before trying his hand at farming, by 1911, at Weraroa. This only lasted till 1928 when he went back to labouring for the rest of his life.
