Friend was born at Lenham, Kent, England.
He immigrated to NZ in 1840 with his mother & step father.
He married Martha Morgan (Born at Wellington in 1844) at Wellington in 1862.
They had seven daughters & ten sons over a 24 year period. Their first child died in infancy.
A grandson (Charles, son of Henry) was killed in action in France in Jul 1916.
Two daughters married brothers (Hyde). One son & one daughter married a Wilton who were not related.
Friend started his working life as a labourer at Tawa Flats around 1870. He then became a farmer, around 1880 at Tawa Flats, for the rest of his working life.
Both Friend, his son Henry & daughter-in-law Helen all owned property in Levin.
