Henry was born at Wamate.

He married Catherine Lowry (born at Oamaru in 1877) in 1900.

They had five sons & three daughters. two sons & one daughter died in infancy. The daughter is buried in Levin.

Two sons, Noel & John, & two sons-in-law, Edward Horan & Leonard Stanaway, served in WW2.

Henry started out as a bottler in Wellington & then became a police constable. He remained a constable for the rest of his career. he served in Levin from at least 1905 to 1908, then Wairoa, Whitianga, finishing up in Hamilton.

His brother Charles was a blacksmith in Levin during the same period he was there.
