James was born in the Lawrence, Central Otago area.
He married Sophia Edwards (born at Wellington in 1871) at Wellington in 1899.
They had two daughters. Sadly one died in infancy & the other in her late 20's. All members of the family are buried in Levin.
James was a saddler by trade, firstly in Lawrence & then Levin from about the late 1890's.
The family lived in Salisbury St.
Both James & Sophia signed the 1905 petition for Levin Township & James was on the unofficial 1905 census.
