John was born at Ossington, Nottinghamshire, England.
He moved to New Zealand some time between 1871 & 1879.
He married Emma Copping (born at Deftport, Kent, England in 1859) in 1879. She landed in New Zealand in 1876, aged 17.
They had two girls & 4 boys. This family had tragedy as the first born died at 4, the 2nd at 13 and two others in infancy.
John was a butcher & then a carter in Wellington. Around 1896 he moved to levin as a labourer & then became a butcher again.
John was on the 1905 unofficial census (for the 1905 Levin township petition) as a butcher with 4 people & two buildings.
Five members of the family are buried in Levin.
