John was born at Garvagh, Derry, Ireland.
He migrated to NZ in 1875, arriving at Timaru, listed as a ploughman.
He married Mary-Ellen Hunt (born at Surrey, England in 1858) at Christchurch in 1876.
They had 15 children, between 1878 & 199. 6 girls & 9 boys. Most were born in Christchurch, however 4 were born at Otaki.
One son died in infancy & one at age 22. He is buried at Tiro Tiro Rd cemetery in Levin.
One son, Charles & one son-in-law, James Pinkerton, served in WW1.
John was described as a dealer in Christchurch & then a farmer in Levin.
Mary-Ellen was recorded on the 1905 unofficial census for the Levin township petition.
