John Robert Brown McFARLANE
John was born in Australia.
He married Elizabeth Ross (also born in Australia in 1882) in Illabrook, Victoria in 1899.
They had 3 daughters, all born in Australia & one son born in NZ.
The family came to NZ around 1903 when John became a coal miner on the West Coast before moving into a Express driver role.
The family moved to Levin to take over ownership & the running of the Arcadia Private Hotel, in Oxford St, Levin, around 1921. They continued to own it even after his death.
One son-in-law, Hugh Vallance, served in WW1 but was invalided out due to ill health.
Another son-in-law, John Barry, served in the Australian forces in WW1 & his son John Alfred in WW2.
John & Elizabeth and a daughter & 2 son-in-laws are all buried in Levin.
John was a foundation member of the Levin Cossie Club, amongst other organisations he belonged to.
