John was born in England.
He married Anne/Annie Murphy (born in 1859 in Ireland) in 1885.
They had four daughters & three sons. All three sons served in WW1. Francis was killed in Palestine, & Thomas was invalided home with a severe head wound. Two son-in-laws, Norman Harris & Dominic O'Donoghue also served in WW1.
John started out as a club steward in Wellington. In 1894 he was declared bankrupt. He was then a hotelkeeper in Foxton & Palmerston Nth. At one stage, around 1915, he was the publican at the Grand Hotel in Levin.
A son-in-law Timothy Kearins was a farmer in Weraroa.
