John was born at sea.
He married Violet Mackie (born at Oamaru in 1888) in 1910.
They had two sons & two daughters.
John started as a butcher at Palmerston (in the south). He moved to Napier by 1911 as a traveller. By 1919 he is at Ohau as a farmer. He then moved into Levin around 1925 as a butcher. By 1938 he is back at Napier as a traveller.
Two of the children were born in Levin with one daughter staying after getting married.
