Joseph Chapman (Joe) RETTER

Joe was born at Surrey, England.

His parents emigrated to NZ in 1841 when Joe was 3 years old.

He married Hannah Stickle (born at Sydney in 1839) on board a ship the "Lord Wm Bendrick" in 1861.

They had five sons & three daughters.

One son-in-law, John Gill, served in WW1.

Hannah ws very well known as 'Granny Retter' around Levin and was honoured with a "Walk of Fame" plaque in 1922 for her work as a nurse & midwife.

Joe was a farmer for most of his working life, starting at Parewanui & then Levin from around 1905.

Joe & Hannah & eight of their family are buried at Levin.
