Joseph was born at Nelson.
He married Maria Tavendale (born at Bller in 1884) in 1907.
They had two daughters & four sons.
Joseph served in the Boer War & one son (Don) & one son-in-law (Donald Arbuthnott) served in WW2.
Joseph started his working life as a baker in Hawera. Around 1905 he ran a bakery business in Oxford St, Levin until around 1920. Thereafter he was a trainer, racecourse caretaker & a foreman in Trentham & Wellington.
Joseph is buried in Levin (although not his wife). One son, Ken & his wife, are also buried in Levin.
