Newton was born at Richmond, near Nelson.
He married Ida Moore (born at Nelson in 1873) at Nelson in 1894.
They had one son & one daughter. The daughter died in infancy.
The son, Clarence (Jack) served in WW1.
Newton started out as a wheelwright in Richmond. He then moved to Hawera then Kaponga as a coachbuilder. In both places he was declared bankrupt.
By 1902 he was at Bulls and then by 1905 in Levin as a carriage builder. By 1922 he had moved to Auckland as an agent then a motor body builder. He retired and lived in Marton (with his dentist son), Auckland & Te Aroha.
In 1905 Newton signed the "Yes" Levin township petition. He was also included in the unofficial census, described as a carriage builder with 3 people in total & 4 buildings.
