Percival Russell (Percy) ROBERTS
Percy was born at the Hutt Valley.
He married Ada Hook (born at Wellington in 1887) at Wellington in 1909. (Her father, Friend, featured in a profile HP0039.)
They had 3 sons & 4 daughters. She died in childbirth along with their 8th child.
He married again, in 1926, to Gertrude Pengelly (born at Oxford, England in 1891). She had a son from a previous relationship, so Percy adopted him as his son.
One son, Mervyn died on active service at El Alamein in WW2. A son-in-law, Percy Mathewson also served in WW2.
Percy started out as a labourer at Lower Hutt, then moved to Levin around 1908. He became a farmer at Koputaroa around 1925, then moved to Wearenga & finally Auckland as a poultry farmer. He retired to Hastings.
The adopted son, William, was a storekeeper in Otaki, then a market gardener in Ohau & then a contractor living in Levin until around 1987.
Percy's mother is buried in Levin as a Butler.
