Philip Alfred RIVE
Philip was born at Jersey on the Channel Islands.
He came to NZ in 1853.
He married Annie Luxford (born at Wellington in 1858) at Wellington in 1880.
They had five children. The first died in infancy. The last two were twins with one dying at the same time as Annie.
He then married Annie's sister, Elizabeth (born at Wellington in 1865) at nelson in 1886.
They went on to have five children, one of whom died very young.
One son, Clifford, served in WW1 & was wounded. A son-in-law, Sydney Mackie, also served in WW1.
Philip started out as a draper in Wellington. However he ended up in bankruptcy in 1888. He then became an accountant before moving to Masterton as a storekeeper & then a commercial traveller.
He won a ballot for a four acre block in Levin in March 1889. However he then sold the block to Alexander Sample.
