It is not known where Robert was born.

It is understood he came to NZ on the Alma in 1859.

He married Catherine Smith (Born at Wellington in 1850) in 1878.

They had one son & two daughters.

Robert was for some years the clerk to the Hon John Martin. He then became an accountant on the staff of the 'Independent'. Later he became part proprietor of the 'Arcus'. For his last 20 years he was the clerk to the House Committee in connection with Bellamys.

Robert purchased Levin Suburban Block 69 (20 acres) in 1893 & held it for two years. This block was bounded by Bartholomew Rd, Liverpool St & Parker Ave.

At the same time Catherine ran a shop in Queen St (W) next to Mrs Bowen's shop/PO.
