Robert was born at Nokomai in Southland.
He married Hellen Crighton (born at Wyndham in 1879) in 1901.
They had 3 sons & a daughter who died as an infant. All were born at Shannon. The eldest son died at 17.
Robert was killed at age 25 when he slipped off a log train and the train wheels ran over him. At the time he was working for Bartholomew's in Levin. (See obituary NZ Times)
His widow, Hellen, remarried to Alfred Slipper & had 3 more sons, one of whom changed his name to Mitchell.
Two od the sons, Henry & Sydney (as Mitchell) served in WW2.
