Thomas was born at Wellington, an older brother of Ernest.

He married Elizabeth (Bessie) Bowler (born at Blenheim in 1863) at Makara in 1887. His brother, Arthur, married Bessie's sister.

They had four sons & one daughter. Three of the sons, Harold, Wilfred & Albert served in WW1. Albert lost the use of 75% of his left arm. Harold also served as a President of the Levin RSA.

Thomas was a farmer, starting in Wellington and settling in Longburn, near Palmerston Nth. One son became a university lecturer, one farmed in Fairfield Rd, Levin, one farmed at Koputaroa and the youngest (with the damaged arm) became a teacher.
