Thomas was born at Chichester, Surrey, England.

He married Emma Beyer (born in 1870) at Albury, NSW, Australia in 1888.

She died at the early age of 38 when they were living in Levin.

He married, again, to Minerva Williamson (born at Waitotara in 1886) at Levin in 1909.

They had one son & one daughter. The son, also called Thomas, served in WW2. The daughters 2nd husband, George Philp-Wright also served in WW2.

Thomas was in Levin by 1905 as a tobacconist, living in Queen St then Mako Mako Rd, until at least 1919. He was on the 1905 unofficial census (for the Levin township petition). He later moved to Gonville & Wanganui as a tobacconist & a hairdresser.
