William Edwin BARNETT
William was born at Dixton, Monmouthshire, Wales.
He emigrated to NZ with his parents & siblings.
He married Eliza Williams (born at Whitechurch, England in 1848) in 1874.
They had six sons & one daughter. One son died in infancy.
There was quite a bit of tragedy in this family.
One son, Herbert, was killed at Flanders in WW1. His wife had died in 1913 and so when he was killed he left 7 children orphaned from the ages of 5 to 13.
Another son drowned in Wellington Harbour at the age of 29. His widow remarried to a WW1 veteran, Peter Clos. There was a muder/suicide in this family in 1928.
William started out as a carpenter in Christchurch around 1880. He moved to Pahiatua & Ballance as a settler around 1890. He then moved to Levin around 1908 as a carpenter, again. A brother, Jospeh, (see own profile) was also living in Levin.
