William FRANCIS
William was born at Slough, Bucks, England.
He married Anna Johnson (born at Upper Hutt in 1870) at Wellington in 1889.
They had eight sons & five daughters over a 22 year period. One son at infancy. Nine were born in Levin & two in Shannon.
Two sons, William Jnr & Lawrence served in WW1 & one, Allan, in WW2. William Jnr was killed at Messines & Allan was killed in the Western Desert.
Two son-in-laws, Frederick Broadbent & John Corkill served in WW1, Frederick for the Australians. His son was killed in WW2,.serving with the RAAF. Two son-in-laws, Leslie Barber & Noel Smith, served in WW2.
Williams started as a bushman at Halcome, around 1880. He was then in Upper Hutt around 1890 as a millhand.
He moved to Levin around 1892 until about 1911, as a labourer. He then moved to Te Aroha then Hamilton as a farmer & sharemilker.
