William was born in England. He came to NZ as an infant with his parents & 6 siblings.
He married Rosetta Grey (born in England) in 1877. She had arrived in NZ, with her mother, in 1874.
They had 4 sons & 4 daughters, one of whom died in infancy.
One son, George (Percy), served in WW1.
William started out as a dairyman in Karori, Wellington. By 1905 he was amailman.
The family moved to Levin around 1914 where he took up farming.
