William was born at Dunedin.
He married Lucy Shuttleworth (born at Howick, Lancashire, England in 1876) in 1909.
They had 4 children, three girls & one boy, all born in Levin.
William was a barrister & solicitor, firstly in Dunedin then Reefton before moving to Levin between 1908 & 1911. His son was also a well known solicitor in Levin.
Three son-in-laws served in WW2, They were Richard Lynch, Edgar Williams & John Tomlinson. Edgar was killed in action in the Pacific in 1943.
