William was born at Sydney, Australia.
The family came to NZ in 1857.
He married Sarah Webley (born at Gloucestershire, England in 1845) at Nelson in 1864.
They had seven daughters & two sons.
Two daughters died in infancy and son Percy died at the Boer War.
One son-in-law, Frederick Barratt, died in an explosion at his home & one, Harold Plimmer, in a motorcycle racing accident.
William lived in Nelson until at least 1875. By 1885 he was in Greytown as a journalist. By 1896 he was in Shannon as a newspaper proprietor & then by 1899 in Levin.
William signed the 1905 'Yes" petition for Levin township & was on the unofficial 1905 census as a newspaper proprietor
